A Caesarean section

01.jpg (24147 bytes)

At the start of the surgery the dog's abdomen is shaven and the skin disinfected.
Subsequently an incision is made over the middle of the abdomen.

The uterus of the female dog consists of two horns. In these uterine horns the puppies develop.

In this photo, the delivery of the first puppy
(a bitch) is shown.
A small incision has been made in the horn to allow for the delivery of the puppies.

Puppies have to be delivered in a quick tempo.
A hemostat is used to clam the umbilical cords.

After delivery, the puppies are quickly rubbed dry; if necessary, their mouths are cleaned of mucus.

Awaiting further things to come, the puppies are huddling together in a plastic basket which is suspended in a plastic crate; the bottom of the crate is covered with a heating pad.

The operation having been over and done with, the mother lost no time to mount guard, keeping a watchful eye over her puppies.
