A Caesarean section

At the start of the
surgery the dog's abdomen is shaven and the skin disinfected.
Subsequently an incision is made over the middle of the abdomen. |
The uterus of the female dog consists of
two horns. In these uterine horns the puppies develop. |

In this photo, the delivery of the first puppy
(a bitch) is shown.
A small incision has been made in the horn to allow for the delivery of the puppies. |
Puppies have to be delivered in a quick tempo.
A hemostat is used to clam the umbilical cords. |

After delivery, the puppies are quickly rubbed dry; if necessary,
their mouths are cleaned of mucus.
Awaiting further things to come, the
puppies are huddling together in a plastic basket which is suspended in a plastic crate;
the bottom of the crate is covered with a heating pad. |

The operation having been over and done
with, the mother lost no time to mount guard, keeping a watchful eye over her puppies. |
